About Slum Village

is a hip hop group from Detroit. It was founded by rappers Baatin, T3, and producer J Dilla. After J Dilla left in 2001, he was replaced by Elzhi. Later, Baatin left due to health issues. Following the deaths of J Dilla in 2006 and Baatin in 2009, T3 is the only surviving member of the original lineup. Over time, the group has experienced several lineup changes and now exists as a duo of T3 and producer Young RJ.

The group recorded their first album, Fantastic (Vol. 1), in 1996-1997 but it wasn't officially released until 2006. Slum Village signed their first record deal in 1998 but had to release their 2000 album Best Kept Secret under the alias “J-88” due to label issues. Best Kept Secret featured remixes and leftover material from Fantastic, Vol. 1. In the same year, Fantastic, Vol. 2 was released on GoodVibe Recordings, featuring guest appearances from Busta Rhymes, Common, D'Angelo, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Pete Rock, Kurupt, and Q-Tip.
